What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that
makes it difficult for people to breathe. The condition affects people of all
ages – not just children.
Asthma happens in the bronchial tubes
(“air tubes”) of the lungs. There are two parts of asthma: bronchoconstriction
(squeezing of the airways), when the muscles around the bronchial tubes spasm,
and inflammation (swelling in the airways) that also causes mucus to clog the
airways.
Asthma Medications
There many medications that help patients
to control their asthma:
Bronchodilators – these help to relax the muscles around the airways
Leukotriene Modifier – these medication stop the inflammatory process
before it starts
Anti-Inflammatories – these help to reduce the swelling in the airways
Inhaled
Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatories.
These are NOT the same as the steroids used to increase muscle or performance.

Living with Asthma
People with asthma can live full, fun and
active lives by taking time to learn about the disease, learn their triggers
(the things that cause asthma to get worse), teaming with a great Asthma Care
Team, and following an individualized Asthma Action Plan (an individualized
plan of how to manage asthma).
Besides following the asthma management
plan created for them, individuals with asthma should do things that improve
general health. Exercise and healthy eating are great for the lungs. Remember,
let your health care provider know when you participate in any health and
wellness programs.
